3 ways to make money with banners:
1) Click-through - 5¢-50¢ (10¢-12¢ average) - company sponsors - be aware of "shaving hits": they don't pay you for all the clicks
2) Partnership or affiliate program (click-through and conversion) - must join site, company pays flat fee or percentage. Percentage makes more money over time. With this option, you don't know if they're cheating you.
3) Sell space

Chargeback - when you don't get a signature on a credit card payment, it can be contested

2) Search Engines

-Everything else - majority of action in top 1-30 results. The goal is to get listed in the top 30 some of the time.
How you get in the top 30:

robots.txt - looks for file in root directory called robots.txt. tells search engines what not to look at. no bigger than 25K. use no word more than 25 times. capitalization makes words different: sex, Sex, and SEX are different words.

index.html - go to the search engines such as hotbot, lycos, excite, infoseek...go to each engine and look up an important search word. look at the top results' source code. do what they did. for each engine, adjust the code accordingly. call each file index1.html, index2.html, ...index10.html. submit all the index files to one engine, then the next, and the next. every day submit 10 more. search engines re-index and change their formula all the time. 90% of traffic comes from the top 10 search engines. don't ever pay a company to submit them for you. use software, such as submitwolf.com, to submit to the non-top-10 engines, and deselect the ones you do by hand. Put your site on every links list you can find. search engines also rank by popularity - how many times it finds your site name on other sites.
